Regal & zonal pelargoniums

The colorful workhorses of the collection. They reward a small amount of attention with a long, generous bloom. Three seasons a year in warm climates.

At a glance

Sun
Full to part sun. Aim for four to six hours a day.
Water
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
Bloom season
Blooms spring through fall in warm weather.
Climate
Happiest in warm weather and easy to keep. Grow it outside when it is mild, or pot it up and bring it indoors when the cold sets in.
Mature size
About 12 to 18 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide.
Difficulty
Beginner friendly.
Pollinator
Butterflies and hummingbirds love the blooms.
Container
Yes. Happy in 6 to 10 inch pots and patio planters.

Field notes

A few things that make a difference.

  • Pinch off spent flower heads at the base of the stem to push a new flush.

  • A monthly half-strength bloom fertilizer keeps the color saturated.

  • If foliage looks tired in midsummer, lightly shape. They bounce back fast.

If something looks off

Quick fixes.

Leaves are yellowing.
Usually too much water. Let the top inch of soil dry between drinks; pelargoniums prefer a thirsty schedule.
Lots of leaves, few flowers.
Move to a brighter spot. They need 4 to 6 hours of direct sun. Cut back nitrogen-heavy feed for a few weeks.
Stems look leggy.
Pinch the growing tips back by a third. They'll branch and refill the silhouette within 3 to 4 weeks.

Philippine violets (Barleria)

Tropical, shade-tolerant, and quietly dramatic. Five rare varieties in the collection. Small in a 4-inch pot, generous as a mature shrub.

Blooms late summer through fall, and repeats often.

A warm-climate shrub. Grow it outdoors where it stays mild, or keep it in a container you can move inside when it gets cold.

A few things that make a difference.

  • Happiest in bright shade or filtered morning sun. Harsh midday light bleaches the blooms.

  • Keep soil consistently moist. Barleria don't like to fully dry out the way pelargoniums do.

  • Cut back by a third in early spring to encourage a fuller, bushier shape.

If something looks off

Quick fixes.

No flowers yet.
First-year plants put energy into roots. Most of our Barleria starters bloom in late summer of year one and explode in year two.
Leaves look pale.
Often a sign of low nutrients. A balanced 10-10-10 monthly fertilizer through the growing season fixes it within a few weeks.

Scented geraniums

Grown more for their fragrance than their flowers. Brush past on the way out the door. Citrus, mint, rose, depending on the variety.

Grown for the fragrant foliage more than the blooms.

Loves warm weather. Keep it on a sunny patio and bring it indoors before the first frost.

Beginner friendly and low fuss.

The lemony scent naturally deters mosquitoes.

Field notes

A few things that make a difference.

  • Place near a path, doorway, or seating so you'll bump the foliage often. That's what releases the oils.

  • Drought-tolerant once established. Underwater rather than over.

  • Pinch frequently. Every snip becomes new growth, which means more scent.

If something looks off

Quick fixes.

The scent is faint.
Foliage scent strengthens with sun and warmth. A few weeks in 4+ hours of direct light deepens the aromatic oils noticeably.
Stems are getting woody.
Normal at the base; the plant is maturing. Light pruning each spring keeps the upper growth fresh and lush.
